Art

The following images are taken from my sketchbooks.  I scanned in the sketches, then added comments to build an electronic sketchbook, which requires much less storage space than the books themselves.  Day-Timer has a great refillable, flexible journal that has unlined pages and a writing guide, so I now combine my writing journal and sketchbook.  I recommend that all writers try sketching; it's a great way to learn to see all the details of whatever it is you're looking at.

Nude

There's no better training for an artist wanting to draw people than a nude study. Although I've been to several figure studios, drawing both female and male nudes, this drawing was copied from a poster in my gynecologist's office.

Cowboy Hat

One day I was sitting in a training class when I became bored and pulled out my sketchbook. The owner of this hat didn't hear much of the lecture either because he was watching me sketch.

Man Asleep

My local dealership has a waiting room filled with comfy furniture, and I often find other customers asleep one of the recliners. Sleeping people make great models because they generally stay still.

Photography

One of my father's interests is photography, which was great because he used to take me along to photograph landscapes.  But I hated the long hours he spent shut up in the darkroom developing the film.  When I took up the hobby, I decided to get all my film commercially developed and make any changes in Photoshop.  These days, I have a small digital camera, which saves me the expense of buying and developing film, and also lets me preview the photographs, so I can delete the bad ones and try again.

Crystal Kitten

In April 2007 I looked up from my desk to see the afternoon sun hitting a shelf in my living room. I grabbed the lead crystal kitten given to me by my high-school boyfriend and set it in a shaft of light for a photograph.

The Yellow Belt

Years ago I participated in a self-defense class taught at the local university. This boy was a classmate, sent by his father because he was small for his age and getting beat up in school. I often wonder what this boy--who by now is a man in his 20s--is doing now.

Baby Boy

This baby was the son of a coworker; I sat across from him on the floor and took a roll of photographs, using the flash to darken the background. I used a dry brush effect in Photoshop to even the skin tones.
